Fauna Data Banks
Rana dalmatinaThe museum's scientific staff carries out research to create data banks related to fauna and biogeographic research. The information generated by the data bank allows for the analysis of the distribution and the ecology of the studied species; it has led to the accomplishment of original works about eco-biogeography which can be applied to the management of the territory.

There have been three main efforts over the past:

1) the data bank and the atlas of the amphibians and of the reptiles of Emilia Romagna. It consists of informatic archives deriving from thousands of studies that have been obtained by means of surveys on the environment carried out over the last ten years. This work was possible thanks to the support of the Emilia Romagna region and has involved many collaborators scattered around the regional territory and has led to the publishing of the herpetological atlas of Emilia Romagna. Maps of species distribution have been added to this atlas that represents the first model of its kind in Italy.

2) the data bank and the atlas of the micro-mammals in Emilia Romagna. This project is underway and involves various University institutes and regional museums, it will launch the design of an atlas that will shed light on the distribution and the ecology of unknown insectivores and rodents . The little mammals such as the Eurasian water voles, the field mice, the spider mice are generally observed with such difficulty that very special techniques and methods of census are necessary, requiring the help and contribution of specialists in this field.

Carabide: Drypta dentata3) the data bank and the catalogue of the coleopters carabids of E.R. This research started in 1995 in collaboration with the Emilia Romagna region. Coleopters carabids are a group of earth's insects, mainly predators which are being studied following the acknowledgment of their precious role of ecological indicators. They play an important role in agriculture and, depending on the species, can be useful or harmful to cultivation of the fields. A data bank and a catalogue will be created out and will be consulted by specialists in this field and by public institutions.

In addition, the activities of the ecological station of the territory provide computerized archives which collect data relevant to the presence, distribution, quantity of families, in space and time. This piece of information has been gathered above all for reasons of basic research and can be used to control the environment without being organized as real data banks available for external users.
